Welcome to the DOTTO city tour mini train, which runs daily in the Zalakaros area.
We would like to introduce our city to you.
During the tour we visit the main streets of the city, the city center, the mayor's office, the post office, the bus station, various hotels, several restaurants and pastry shops, the Karos Korzo, the arboretum, the Church of Divine Mercy, various playgrounds, the school, the kindergarten, the day-nursery, the St. Stephen-square, the pottery workshop and the park forest in which the Look-out Tower is located. If you wish, we can also take you by the small train to the Szent Orbán wine cellar and restaurant, where you can enjoy delicious regional wine and food. In 1962 the healing water of Zalakaros was discovered. Hydrocarbon research was carried out near Zalakaros and during a test drilling, at a depth of about 2,700 meters, instead of petroleum, thermal water with an unusually high temperature of 96 degrees, rich in minerals, was found. This healing water has radically changed the life of the small village of Zala. On September 5, 1965, Zalakaros Fürdő opened its doors. And thanks to ever-increasing tourism, the former village has become a small town with good infrastructure. In 2018, Zalakaros Spa took second place in the Spa of the Year competition. Since its founding, the pool has been visited by more than 32 million people. This is a miracle in itself, as the Zalakaros Baths brought peace and healing to so many people. The healing water has its greatest effect in the follow-up treatment of chronic gynecological, exercise, accident and surgical procedures, as well as for certain skin diseases and cardiac, circulatory and metabolic disorders. What this water can achieve has already been shown: the first well was drilled in 1962 and the spa has been in operation ever since. The Zalakaros spa currently operates 8 drilled wells, the wells supply 30 pools, the total water surface of the 30 pools is 5800 m2. This makes the Zalakaros spa the second largest rural spa in Hungary. In 2023, the spa built a geothermal network on its own and heats its buildings with healing water. In addition to the pool, the settlement has of course also developed, the number of permanent residents is constantly increasing and is currently almost 3,000 people. In addition to the hotels, private accommodation was also built. The settlement has 14 hotels, 8 guesthouses and almost 450 private accommodations with a capacity of about 7,000 people. Thanks to its bath, Zalakaros received city status on July 1, 1997. The city is decorated with plants and flowers everywhere, and the Kanna flower is the symbol of the city.In 1995 Zalakaros joined to the movement “For a flowering Hungary”. In 2002 our city became “the city of flowers” of Hungary. It took first place in the “Cities” category. In 2003 she received the silver medal at the European competition and has since received numerous national and international awards. The three winners were selected from 500 settlements. After Debrecen and Szeged, Zalakaros became the third most attractive settlement in Hungary. This is the result of the excellent and conscientious work of all tourism stakeholders operating in the city. The award is a clear proof that the flowery town is a real treasure not only for the locals, but also beautiful and special for the guests who come here. Thanks to the developments of recent years, Zalakaros has become a year-round tourist destination and, in addition to the developments, has become a micro-regional center. Zalakaros has 3 neighbor cities such as Puchheim in Germany, Asperhofen in Austria and Olesno in Poland. Zalakaros is the part of the Zala wine region, a member of the Zala Wine Route. 80% of the wines are certified and can be tasted during a wine tasting in a wine cellar. The city has several distinctive areas that guests can pay attention to, such as the country's unique thermal lake in Zalakaros, built in 2015, which was built using the flowing thermal water. Since then it has become one of the city's most popular attractions. In 2021, the new modern Zalakaros city center and the Karos Korzó event space were presented, of which the city is rightly proud. We recommend the Look-out Tower as a destination. The new 23 meter high Look-out Tower was built from oak wood, which has a completely different structure and look compared to the previous building. When the weather is clear you have a beautiful panoramic view of the Balaton Highlands from above, you can see Mount Badacsony, the Tanú Mountains, Little Balaton and the surrounding landscape. You can hop on and off at any stop and can take your way back at the time you arranged with the driver when you purchased your ticket. Experiencing the spirit of the city with us throughout our trip is so much easier because you can explore Zalakaros outside the city center that are not in walking distance!
